Mourning Cloak Butterflies like to eat tree sap. They will walk down the trunk of a tree to the sap and feed with their head pointing down. They will also eat rotting fruit, and sometimes on flower nectar.
Adult Mourning Cloaks range in size from around 2 3/4 – 3 3/4 inches.
These are one of the only butterflies that can live through winter. They are found all over the United States.
